Invitation to Environmentalists

5 June 1997

ISTA (Fog Creek) is a Sacred Site for the Nuxalkmc

This site is being desecrated by the Interfor logging corporation

The logging done at ISTA is illegal because Interfor is trespassing on Nuxalk Land

We have not consented or negotiated away our Nuxalk Title and Rights at ISTA so the timber is being "stolen"

We have continually requested sustainable logging practices
but ISTA is still being CLEARCUT logged under the
BC Forest Practices Code

We call for an end to industrial clearcut logging on the mid coast of BC

We invite the Forest Action Network, Greenpeace, Bearwatch and PATH
to stand together with us to protect ISTA and the
ancient rainforests of Nuxalk Territory

The political position of the Nuxalk has always been in place
and has not changed at all

We call for support from the Chief and Councils of the Heiltsuk,
Kitasoo and Oweekeno to protect Indian Land in Nuxalk Territory

For the future of our children, grandchildren and those yet to be born . . .

Way!

"I am charged with contempt of court. Yet there is continuous contempt of our culture, our heritage, our lands and our rights"

"Logging companies coming to our land without our consent show contempt of our laws, our land, our people"

Chief Qwatsinas
Bella Coola, 1997
Left: RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) speed boats transported ISTA activists from the remote King Island wilderness to the Bella Bella Indian Reserve, from where they were taken by police helicopters to jail in Vancouver

International supporters of the Nuxalk were shocked by the brutality of the police toward the peaceful defenders of Indigenous Title and Rights
